Ce CD est une merveille, pour ne pas dire un chef-d'oeuvre.
Des chansons à couper le souffle sur une musique impeccable. Toutes les pièces sont excellentes, en particulier "The Kingdom of Heaven".

A survivor's journey
When artists go through trauma and manage to overcome it, this experience is often translated into their music. This approach yields mixed results, from preachy sermons to navel-gazing self-absorption. Thankfully, Melissa Etheridge has found a way on "The Awakening" to avoid both those pitfalls and to come out with an album that deserves to be considered her best since 1995's "Your Little Secret".
The album is a collection of sixteen beautifully crafted songs (including four short interludes) that cover Melissa's personal journey from her fame-seeking young adulthood right up to her current status as a socially concerned singer-songwriter, while directly addressing the impact cancer had on her vision of life. The album delivers a vision of spirituality, politics and love that is personal ("God is in the people", "Open your mind", "Heroes and friends"), intimate ("I have loved you before", "Threesome") and sometimes quite confrontative ("Kingdom of heaven", "Imagine that", "What happens tomorrow"). The lyrics are straightforward, conversational and obviously heartfelt, whether the listener will agree on her views or not.
Musically, it's also her strongest in years. Some of her output of the last decade was dangerously on the border of becoming generic and bland (culminating with the saccharine-heavy "Lucky"), but this album finds Melissa in full control of her voice and her art. While it's definitely not her most musically upbeat album, there are enough highlights (the first single "Message to myself", the rocking "Threesome", the bittersweet "Map of the stars", the inspiring "The universe listens" and the melodic "California" are all particularly effective) to keep the listener entertained and attentive, which is a rare quality nowadays. Kudos to Melissa for releasing an album that is both personal AND politically aware; it took courage, and it makes her live up to the title of her "Brave and crazy" album.
